Are you looking for an affordable, eco-friendly and quick way to explore Stockton? Well, you’re in luck, because right next to Starbucks at the Willian Knox Holt Memorial Library is one of Bike Stockton’s newly launched e-bike hubs.

Sustainable transportation options

Earlier this month, Bike Stockton launched the city’s first e-bikeshare program, stationed at Pacific’s campus. The program is committed to providing an affordable and eco-friendly transportation option that promotes the health and well-being of Stockton residents.

“Pacific recognizes the importance of having low-carbon transportation alternatives that are connected to the greater community infrastructure,” said Jessica Bilecki, director of sustainability at Pacific. “We supported the program early on and were happy to host a bike hub given the large number of people we have in one area.”

Bike Stockton is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that aims to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, boost the economy and improve public health and the environment. There are currently five bike hubs stationed around central Stockton with additional locations popping up in the upcoming months.

What it’s like to ride an e-bike

Riding a bike for the first time in six years was intimidating, yet fun. I was curious if it was true that you never forget how to ride a bike. After experimenting I can confirm it is, but there is a learning curve. I spent the first couple of minutes remembering how to balance and pedal my feet. However, once I re-learned, I was amazed at how fast I could travel with little effort.

The pedal-assist e-bikes have a small electric motor that assists with each pedal stroke. Once you start pedaling, the motor automatically turns on and allows you to ride for longer regardless of fitness level. The bikes are user-friendly and can reach speeds up to 16 mph. This makes it perfect to run errands without worrying about breaking a sweat.

E-bikes are perfect for longer trips when walking seems too daunting. It’s affordable and outdoorsy, and I can’t wait to explore more of Stockton with them!

Explore Stockton on a bike

Bilecki hopes the e-bike hub on campus will enhance the student experience. “It provides a fun, easy way to better connect and explore local shops, restaurants and community events,” she said.

A 30-second bike ride south of campus will take you to Stockton’s iconic Miracle Mile. There are a variety of boutiques, restaurants and salons throughout the strip to explore and some vendors even offer discounts for Pacific students.

If you’re looking for an open-air market, there are two just a few minutes north of campus. Buy from and support local farmers at the Weberstown Farmers Market from 8 a.m.–1 p.m. at Weberstown Mall on Sundays year-round and Thursdays from May to November. The Market at Delta occurs every Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m.–1 p.m. at San Joaquin Delta College. At this flea market you can find new and used merchandise, fresh produce, live plants and more.

How it works

If you’re unsure of how to get started, no worries. Follow these simple steps to start riding:
